Nathan Brody Chemical Dependency Program Celebrates Recovery Month with an Open House

LACONIA, NH– In celebration of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, The Nathan Brody Program and Horizon Counseling Center are hosting an open house on Wednesday, September 30, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Nathan Brody Chemical Dependency Program offices at 73 Daniel Webster Highway, Belmont (in the upper level of the Wilcom Building). The open house will be followed by an educational presentation from 6:00-7:30 p.m. entitled “Understanding Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorders; Revisiting the Chicken or the Egg.”

The presentation will feature Jacqui Abikoff, LICSW, LADC from Horizon’s Counseling Center and Suzann Caldon RNC, LADC from the Nathan Brody Chemical Dependency Program at LRGHealthcare and will examine the inter-relationship between substance use and mental illness (co-disorders) with respect to assessment and effective treatment strategies.

A co-occurring disorder diagnosis is given to someone who has both a substance use and a mental health disorder. These conditions occur together frequently. Symptoms of these disorders can overlap and make it difficult to determine the correct diagnosis. Many of the symptoms of substance use such as extreme anxiety, depression, paranoia, delusions and hallucinations are similar to symptoms of mental illness. The use of substances of abuse can cause or exacerbate preexisting mental illness.
